John DEWEY est né le 20 octobre 1859 à Burlington. Philosophe américain. Il est l'auteur de nombreux ouvrages dans le domaine de la pédagogie et est une référence en nature d'éducation nouvelle. Etudiuant à l'université du Vermont d'où il sort diplômé en 1879 puis dans plusieurs universités américaines où il obtient son doctorat sur Immanuel KANT. Président de la Société Américaine de Psychologie. Auteur entre autres de "L'école et la Société" (1889), "Démocratie et Education" (1916). Sa méthode repose sur le hands-on-learning, apprendre par l'action.
