SANDWICH...UNE VISITE ROYALE...

En 1572, la reine Elisabeth I vint à Sandwich. De grands préparatifs furent organisés. Les rues furent pavées et nettoyées de tous les immondices qui pouvaient s'y trouver ; les maisons furent richement parées et décorées de blanc et de noir. Les porcs furent remisés. Des échaffauds furent installés dans Strand street. La reine arriva à sandwich le 31 août vers 7 heures du soir et fut reçue par le maire John GILBERT et ses conseillers à Sandown Castle, aux limites de la ville. Sa Majesté logea dans la demeure où son père avait lui-même dormi. Le lendemain, des festivités étaient organisées pour son divertissement et le jour suivant fut servi un repas composé de 90 plats. ce banquet qui se tint à l'école avait été préparé par la femme du Maire et les veuves des conseillers. Queen Elizabeth visited Sandwich in 1572. Grand preparations were made for her reception. BOYS described how the houses in Strand street and elsewhere were beautiful and adorned with black and white. The streets were paved, and all dung and filfth removed, or covered with earth. Hogs were confined to certain specified places. Scaffolds were erected in Strand street, on which were placed children, spinning yarn. The Queen arrived at Sandwich on Monday, August 31st, about 7 in the evening, and was received by John GILBERT, the Mayor, the Town Clerk and certain of jurats and councillors, at Sandown Castle, at the town's limit. Her Majesty rode into the town to her lodging in the house where her father had stayed. The next day a mock battle took place for her amusement, and the day following a great banquet of ninety dishes on a table twenty-eight feet long, held in the school house, and prepared by the Mayoress and the wives of the jurats (Extract History of Sandwich H.
