SANDWICH...THE GUILDHALL

BOYS écrit qu'en 1578, il a été décrété que le nouveau bâtiment du marché au grain serait pour toujours le "Courthall" aujourd'hui connu sous le nom de Guildhall qui se situe sur la place du marché. Au rez-de-chaussée se trouve une salle lambrisée, avec une plateforme surélevée sur laquelle se dresse le "Magisterial Chair".

On remarquera également dans cette salle les armoiries du roi Jacques Ier. C'est dans cette salle que se réunissaient auparavant les membres du Conseil. Aujourd'hui ils se réunissent à l'étage dans une salle où sont installés aux murs des tableaux retraçant l'histoire de la commune et des portraits des personnes ayant été associées à Sandwich. BOYS write that "in 1578 it was decreed that the new building in the corn market shall be the courthall of the town forever." The Courthall, now known as the Guildhall, still stands in the Market Place, and on the whole is much as it was in the reign of Elizabeth I. On the ground floor is the oak-panelled Court Room, with a raised platform on which stands the "Magisterial Chair".

Over the chair is a coat of Arms, probably those of James I. Assizes and Quarter Sessions were held in the hall until quite recently. Now it is only used for Petty Sessions. Above is the Council Chamber, where the Borough Council of Sandwich still holds its meetings.
