Everyone takes their place – the jury making a lot of noise.
The Judge : Silence in court ! Herald, read the accusation !
L’héraut : (sifflant trois fois avec la trompette) SILENCE ! L’accusation : Pierre a dénaturé l’esprit du jumelage en organisant cette soirée débridée.
Alice : Pierre stands accused of betraying the spirit of twinning by organising this crazy evening !
The Judge : Hmm ! …….. Jury ! Consider your verdict ! (les jurés chahutent – the jurors cry out)
L’héraut : Pas encore, pas encore ! Pas de jugement avant le procès !
Alice : We can’t have the verdict before the trial!
The Judge : Oh all right! Call the first witness
L’héraut : (sifflant trois fois avec la trompette) Le premier témoin !
The Duchess : (bustles in shaking her skirt and carrying a baby) I was in the kitchen eating my pepper tartI Look ! Cook has covered me in pepper again !
(Tous éternuent) ( Everyone sneezes)
Le chapelier fou: (il entre avec un sandwich pain beurre dans une main et une tasse de the dans l’autre) : Desolé je prenais le thé quand on m’ appelé !(Il éternue, met le sandwich dans sa bouche et donne la tasse de thé à un juré)…….. ( en regardant The Duchess) C’est toi qu’il faut remercier pour cette nuage de poivre ?
The Judge : (To the Duchess) Get rid of that baby! (The Duchess throws the baby to the chapelier fou)
(To the Chapelier Fou) ……Take off your hat !
Le chapelier fou : Je ne peux pas enlever mon chapeau! Ce n’est pas à moi
Les jurés : Voleur!
The jurors: Not his hat! Thief!
The Judge : (to the Duchess and chapelier fou) : Tell me whose is that baby?
The Duchess: Shan’t
Le chapelier fou : A qui ce bébé? Je ne sais pas (Il le jette à un juré)
Alice: (To the Duchess) Tell her who the baby belongs to or she’ll have you executed on the spot !
The Judge : (to the chapelier fou) Bring me the list of singers in the last concert!
Le chapelier fou : (à un juré) Apportez au juge la liste des chanteurs qui ont pris part au dernier concert ! (Le juré ne bouge pas)
L’ héraut : (à The Duchess) Allez ! Votre témoignage ! Sans trembler sinon ….. (il fait signe de quelqu’un à qui on coupe la tête)
The Duchess : There was too much pepper in my pepper tart so I had a cup of tea. The taste of the tart and the twinkling of the tea……….
L’héraut : Le goût de la tarte - des scintillations du thé? Dans cette histoire tout commence par le T
The Duchess : Of course twinkling and twinning begin with a T. Do you take me for a dunce not a Duchess?
L’accusé : C’est une excellente marque de thé ! (Sortant une boite de thé Twinings de son sac)
Le chapelier fou & the Duchess: (en dansant / performing a little dance) Twinning ! Twinkling ! Twinings ! Twinning ! Twinkling ! Twinings !
Les Jurés : (en même temps, en chahutant) : C’est la meilleure marque de thé ! Oui ! Non !
The Jurors : (at the same time, making a racket) : It’s the best brand of tea ! Yes ! No !
L’ herault: (siffle sur la trompette) SILENCE!
The Judge : (To the chapelier fou, The Duchess & Alice) You may go ! (Ils restent) (They don’t move)
Le chapelier fou : Je préfère finir ma tasse de thé ! (Il reprend sa tasse)
The Judge: (Aux jurés)/ To the jury) Consider your verdict !
Les Jurés (chahutent) : Coupable ! Innocent !
The Jurors (making a racket) : Guilty ! Innocent !)
L’héraut : (sifflant trois fois avec la trompette) SILENCE ! (Au Juge) Plaise à votre grandeur, il y a encore des pièces à conviction à examiner ! Voilà une lettre écrite par le prisonnier ! Sans adresse sur l’enveloppe, ni signature.
Alice : (seizing the letter) How do you know it’s a letter written by the prisoner? There’s no address on the envelope nor signature on the letter.
The Judge : He must have imitated somebody else’s hand !
L’accusé : Plaise à votre grandeur, ce n’est pas moi qui l’ai écrite, et l’on ne saurait prouver le contraire !
The Judge : I will prove you wrote it! If you didn’t sign it, that only makes the matter worse !
L’héraut : Mais regardez ! C’est le programme qu’il a conçu pour cette soirée ! Il faut qu’il y ait eu quelques mauvaises intentions, sinon il l’aurait signé comme le fait tout honnête homme !
Alice : (Seizing the letter and handing it to the Judge) Look ! it’s the programme he wrote for this evening’s crazy festivities ! Unsigned !!
(Chahut des jurés – Racket from the jurors)
L’ herault : (siffle sur la trompette) SILENCE!
The Judge : That proves his guilt, of course ! Sentence first, verdict afterwards !
Le chapelier fou : (indiquant l’accusé) Coupable !Condamnation d’abord, jugement ensuite !
The Judge & Le chapelier fou (ensemble / together): Off with his head ! / Qu’on lui coupe la tête !
The Judge : No ! No ! Instead he is condemned to forever drink his coffee from a mug with a disappearing cat !!
Le chapelier fou : Non !! Non ! Il est condamné à se souvenir de cette soirée à jamais quand il boit son café sous l’œil du Chat du Cheshire
